Google Pixel 9a Launches in the UK at £499 — Available Now

Google Pixel 9a smartphone on frosted glass surface, UK launch at £499

Google’s mid-range flagship is here. The Google Pixel 9a went on sale in the UK today, April 10, 2026, priced from £499 for the 128GB model and £599 for 256GB. Both are available to order now from the Google Store UK and Amazon UK, with the 256GB variant limited to Obsidian and Iris colourways.

After a brief delay — Google paused the launch in March to investigate a component quality issue — the phone is now shipping without restriction. The wait is over.

What You Get

The Pixel 9a is built around Google’s Tensor G4 chip, the same processor powering the full Pixel 9 series. It’s paired with 8GB of RAM and your choice of 128GB or 256GB of storage. The display is a 6.3-inch AMOLED panel with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and peak brightness of 2,700 nits — noticeably larger and brighter than the Pixel 8a’s 6.1-inch screen.

Camera-wise, Google has moved from the Pixel 8a’s 64MP main sensor to a new 48MP shooter with a wider f/1.7 aperture. That’s not a downgrade. The wider aperture improves light intake, particularly at night, and for the first time on an A-series Pixel, you get full astrophotography mode and a dedicated macro focus capability. A 13MP ultrawide completes the rear setup. All of Google’s AI camera tools are present — Magic Editor, Auto Frame, Add Me, and Gemini integration throughout.

Battery capacity is the biggest single upgrade. The Pixel 9a carries a 5,100mAh cell, the largest ever fitted to a Pixel handset. Google claims over 30 hours of standard use and up to 100 hours with Extreme Battery Saver active. Charging tops out at 23W wired and 7.5W wireless — no charger is included in the box.

The phone achieves IP68 dust and water resistance, up from the Pixel 8a’s IP67. It comes in four colours: Obsidian, Porcelain, Peony, and Iris.

Software support is a genuine differentiator. The Pixel 9a ships with Android 15 and is guaranteed seven years of OS and security updates — putting it ahead of most rivals at this price.

What’s New Compared to the Pixel 8a

The headline changes are the larger display (6.3-inch vs 6.1-inch), the significantly bigger battery (5,100mAh vs 4,400mAh), an upgraded IP68 waterproofing rating, and the step up to Tensor G4. Charging speed remains unchanged at 23W — that’s still a weak point at this price and Google’s competitors have moved faster here.

The starting price has held at £499, exactly the same as the Pixel 8a launch price. For a phone with a larger screen, bigger battery, and better waterproofing, that’s a straightforward win for buyers.

Is It Worth Buying?

At £499, the Pixel 9a makes a strong case for itself. Seven years of updates, a flagship-grade Tensor G4 chip, best-in-class camera software, IP68 protection, Gemini integration, and the biggest battery ever in a Pixel — all at a price that hasn’t moved in a year. It competes directly with the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro and the Samsung Galaxy A56 at the same price bracket.

If you want a step up to a premium flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S26 starts from £799 and brings a more powerful chipset and a higher-end build — but for most everyday buyers, the gap in real-world performance won’t justify £300 more.

The Pixel 9a is built for UK Android users who want a phone that’s genuinely excellent at the basics, stays updated for years, and won’t need replacing anytime soon. The battery alone makes it worth serious consideration.
